Musical instrument insurance - an un-necessary expense?

It's a sad fact that millions of guitars and other musical instruments are stolen, damaged or lost every year. The popularity of online auction sites have made it very easy for unscrupulous thieves to easily sell stolen instruments and musical equipment. Whilst other insurers rely on gimmicky tracking devices, there is no central registration point for stolen items and many police forces around the country don't own the scanning equipment necessary to be able to return items to their owners. We always hate to be negative and be seen to be harbingers of doom but many musicians form an incredible bond with their guitar, drums or bass and it's a very emotional experience to have one of your musical instruments broken, damaged or stolen. Worse still, many people could not afford to replace an item without musical instrument insurance.

Home contents cover – an alternative for specialist musical instrument insurance?

Whilst there are some excellent home contents cover in the marketplace and you may think that you are adequately covered, you might be in for a shock. If you play for money or even take your musical instruments out of the house, you may not be covered at all! If you are relying on home contents cover for your musical instrument insurance you should also check the maximum item value, maximum total value (all the items together) and whether you can take them out of your home.
